The gaming wars have heated up again, as Microsoft just unveiled the new Xbox One, its next-generation entertainment console poised to smash the Wii U and the Playstation 4 to pieces. Were not gonna call it a straight-up gaming system because playing games seems almost besides the point: This puppy lets you watch TV, surf the Web, access a cloud server, make Skype calls and even change the channel with your voice.

Gamers arent being left out, though: The new Call of Duty: Ghosts will roll out on the One, and Steven Spielberg is exec-producing a new Halo series. The One has also been revved up with 8G of memory, voice-and-gesture commands, and a hypersensitive controller.

In fact, the only thing it wont be able to do is play old Xbox games.

In his first Meyerson Symphony Center concert after the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s triumphant European tour, music director Jaap van Zweden again had the orchestra playing with amazing electricity and elegance Friday night. The all-Wagner program marked the bicentenary of probably the most influential composer—either admired or detestedof the second half of the 19th century.

Wagner’s musical innovations were certainly displayed: long, sometimes meandering phrases; fluid, elusive harmonies; continuous vocal writing, no longer clearly separating recitative and aria; dramatic coloring and massing of orchestral sound.

NEW YORK — Here’s a list “Fifty Shades of Grey” was destined to make: The books most likely to be removed from school and library shelves.

On Monday, E L James’ multimillion selling erotic trilogy placed No. 4 on the American Library Association’s annual study of “challenged books,” works subject to complaints from parents, educators and other members of the public. The objections: Offensive language, and, of course, graphic sexual content.

No. 1 was a not a story of the bedroom, but the bathroom, Dav Pilkey’s “Captain Underpants” books (Offensive language, unsuited for age group), followed by Sherman Alexie’s prize-winning “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” (Offensive language, racism, sexually explicit), and Jay Asher’s “Thirteen Reasons Why”(Drugs/alcohol/smoking, sexually explicit, suicide). It was no secret in recent weeks that the judges on American Idol were showing slight favoritism towards Amber Holcomb. But their praise couldn’t bring her out of the bottom two last week, and she was sent home. Does Holcomb think the judges’ reactions backfired in her voting tally?

“Not necessarily,” Amber tells TVGuide.com. “For some reason, I was always in the bottom, so I guess they were just trying to get America to see what they weren’t seeing.”

The Back Nine Café is run by the brother/sister team of Nick Muce and Antonella Fernandes and what a dynamic duo they make. Muce runs the back of the house and Fernandes is a cheerful presence in the dining room, delivering food and stopping by to make sure patrons are happy.

The dishes are homemade by Muce and he really knows how to pair ingredients. Even the traditional cup of clam chowder ($3.75) burst with fresh flavors and offered a homey sense of comfort with plenty of clams and potatoes in a light and lovely broth. The side Caesar salad ($4) consisted of romaine hearts chopped to a perfect-for-the-fork size, mixed with a light and lemony homemade Caesar dressing and an abundance of shaved Romano. The homemade rustic croutons on top were warm, which created a nice contrast to the cool salad.

Blu-ray Review: The Grapes of Death (1978)

I cant help but think it has some subtext too, just going off of French stereotypes as a people obsessed with wine. I dont know how regularly Rollin drank, but a strong case could be made that The Grapes of Death has a message about how drinking to excess transforms us into monsters. In a country where table wine is as ubiquitous as water, The Grapes of Death may have had more meaning and weight than its lurid monster movie approach would suggest. As an American, I can only guess at it, without providing any deeper thoughts than, Huh. Thats interesting.

The biggest weakness of the film is that it climaxes too early, when Elisabeth comes across a blind woman who is desperately searching for her husband amidst all the chaos. Actual tension is created, and Rollin pays it off with a horrific (though not 100% realistic) moment of gore thats not typical of his work.

George Saunders in Dallas: Casual brilliance from a writer’s writer

My experience with reading George Saunders is that he keeps you on edge, because you never know when his stories are going to take some sort of twist that shocks you out of your seat.

My experience listening to him on Friday at the Dallas Museum of Art, where he was appearing as part of Arts Letters Live, was similar.

At least half of it was. Saunders gave a talk that was probably the kind you would expect to see from a short story writer appearing at an indie bookstore, not from the man who just graduated from cult fave to one of Americas best-known writers with that New York Times Sunday Magazine story, speaking before a large, sold-out auditorium. The Texas native acknowledged his family in attendance his parents were in the crowd, and he lovingly thanked them for their support, even and then he proceeded to read from Tenth of December.

John Rectors Kindle Single Lost Things is a story about what happens after a pair of friends are attacked one night on a deserted street. Its an exciting and fast read, though the ending seemed to me too abrupt. But the Single did its job. It introduced me to an author Id never heard of before, and Ive now downloaded a sample of Rectors novelAlready Gone to my Kindle.

Pretty much every man, woman, and child in beautiful Pagford and its ugly, socioeconomically depressed appendage known as “The Fields” lives a miserable existence. Children hate parents, spouses hate spousees, everyone is mean or depressed or abusive or abused. J.K.
