Sammy and Bella celebrate after winning My Kitchen Rules 2011.
Did the best team win?
SYDNEY sisters Sammy and Bella Jakubiak have been crowned the winners of Seven’s My Kitchen Rules.
The Jakubiaks cooked a five-course Mediterranean-inspired menu to beat Melbourne housemates Kane Lillywhite and Lee Chan for the title.
Their total score of 56 out of 60 points included two perfect 10s from celebrity judges Karen Martini and Liz Egan.
“You girls have shown such incredible techniques,” Egan told the sisters.
Lillywhite, 28, and Chan, 25, were described by the judges as stars in the kitchen but their total of 52 points for a Japanese-inspired menu fell short of the sisters’ winning score.
The Jakubiaks, who gave up their jobs in fashion to take part in the competition and for a chance to pursue careers in the food industry, said they had found their calling.
“I really feel that we’ve found the meaning of our life,” said Sammy Jakubiak, who at 22 was the show’s youngest contestant.
She said they had made their families – in particular their grandmother, from whom they have always taken their cooking cues – very proud.
“She’s probably the most important person to make proud,” she said through tears.
The two teams, who had to plate up 100 dishes for judges Pete Evans and Manu Feildel, guest judges Tobie Puttock, Guy Grossi, Martini and Egan, as well as some eliminated contestants, were cheered on by their families during the taped finale.
Both teams were praised early on by the judges, with Fieldel describing the sisters’ first course as the perfect dish to start a five-course meal.
Evans told Chan she had a “gift for food”, and their menu was labelled amazing.
But even a mini meltdown between courses from 27-year-old Bella Jakubiak, in which she crumbled to the ground near the cooking bench and cried for several minutes, didn’t stop the sisters from walking away with the title and a $100,000 cash prize.
The MKR grand final aired on the same night as Ten’s launch for its highly successful cooking show, MasterChef, which premieres on Sunday, May 1.
